My memories of Uncle George are of his easy-going nature. He was always nice, easy to speak with, and had a happy-go-lucky attitude. One time when I stayed overnight at their house was I was 6 years old, i turned on the TV at 6 am to watch cartoons, Aunt Joann corrected us that it was too early for loud TV, but Uncle George let us watch cartoons. To a 6 year old he was my hero.
Another time was when I lived outside the country for a number of years and returned for a family function, Uncle George was tending bar, and was listening to everyone’s stories, adding comical interjections here and there. He always seemed happy when tending bar.
When at Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, I remember how the “boys” would talk football - or should I say argue? It was loud. Grandma made them turn off the TV for the saying of grace. Uncle George made sure the TV went right back on right afterwards. Holidays were loud and fun.
I have many more memories, like being allowed to climb the chestnut tree with my brother and cousin “Louie” in their backyard on Leroy Ave - and Uncle George letting us. And I’ll never forget when Uncle George bought Aunt Joann a stuffed camel (Aunt Joann loved camels) and when asked why he said because I love Aunt Joann.
My family (aunts & uncles, grandma, parents, sibling, cousins...) shaped my life. I hope my sharing memories helps shape yours.
Uncle George was a nice man. Rest in peace, Uncle George.
