It has been many years since I spoke to Lenard. But as a teacher he had a profound impact on me. He gave me a few fun nicknames, “Catapult,” because that’s how I would throw the ball during Chekhov exercises and “Floozy,” because of my full commitment to my Spoon River monologue character. He was one of my favorite teachers and i looked forward to his class every week.
In both my work as an actor and human person I still use “Stick/Ball/Veil as a way to interpret/understand the characters around me. Before I’m about to do something that scares me, I imagine myself radiating confidence and sparkles. And although I don’t throw balls around often because sports are awful; when I do play a game of catch, I think of Leonard jovially yelling at me “Okay, Miss Catapult!”
My condolences to his family and all who loved him.
RIP, Leonard Petit!
Love, Allegra Heart

I graduated Rutgers in 2008. I took Clown Technique with Mr. Petit, and I remember him laughing to a scene my classmates Jamal, Michelle, Byron, Paul and I improvised.
We were kids being tucked into bed, while the "Monster Clown" was in our closet, jumping out whenever our parents left. Everytime Michelle and Byron left the room, we would "shake in bed". And when the Clown jumped out the closet, we "the normal people Clowns" would scream for our parents. We did this about 3 times and Leonard was CRACKING up laughing. The entire class was laughing, but he was absolutely red in a way I didn't usually see other Teachers.
Lenard was down to earth, and he met you eye-to-eye. He lived his work as much as he taught it.
I remember sharing with him how writing down my actor beats had felt so mechanical sometimes. I just wanted to "let go".
He smiled, like I had discovered something big. Then he said, "Do that. Let go".
Lenard Petit is a person I have thought of so often in my life, because of all those lessons, and that laugh.
He made me a better actor and person.
Thank you Lenard Petit.
He will be SORELY missed, but SURELY remembered.
In my red wax nose,
Keona Welch-Lesko

He was a true artist, a profound teacher, and an elegant performer. As I mentioned in a previous post, his 1-person A Christmas Carol, will be something I never forget.
Being honest, when I was his student, I was challenged and confused by what he offered at times. He knew it and didn’t condemn me for it. Even during my most difficult times in his class, he met me with understanding and humor. I don’t remember how or why, but we gave each other nick-names: he called me Larry (for Lawrence Olivier), and I called him Trevor (after the director Trevor Nunn). It was silly, as we’d always get into high-falutin’ contrived conversations about theater, fully committed to with affected accents. In retrospect, I cannot help but feel he used it to serve as a reminder to not take ourselves too seriously. Perhaps his adroit way to get me to ease up on myself (I was/am often prone to subjecting high standards upon myself). These exchanges with our nick-names always ended with laughter.
I am ashamed that I didn’t keep up with him, it’s something I find I need to be better at, keeping up with people – but life gets in the way, doesn’t it? There’s always something.
So, here I am, being taught by Lenard one last time…taught that fateful lesson that cannot be offered too often – Take nothing for granted folks.
Thanks again, Trevor, for all the lessons, laughs and inspiration.
I hope you are wearing that red, wax-nose somewhere, making the angels feel something.

Lenard's work had a profound effect on me as an actor, teacher and human being. He opened up a doorway in me to experience acting and life as something mystical, divine and joyful. I am so deeply grateful to have had the chance to work with him and am sad that we'd fallen out of touch. Rest in peace dear teacher. Thank you for seeing me. Meg and Luke, may his memory be a blessing to you both. He was such a light!
