Family and friends invited to attend funeral services on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 2:00PM in the First Church of Evans ( Rt. 5 at Sturgeon Point Rd.), Derby, NY. Interment will follow in the Forest Avenue Cemetery, Angola, NY. Cheryl was born in Silver Creek, NY on August 3, 1943 and grew up on the Guest family farm in Angola, NY. During her teen years, she belonged to the Bust Bee 4-H Club in Angola and also took up roller skating with her mother, eventually becoming a judge in skating competitions. She was a 1961 graduate of Lake Shore Central High School. She then received her bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and then her master's from Michigan State. She went on to be an English/Reading teacher at Lake Shore Central. During her teaching career she taught a young man straight from Poland, without any knowledge of our language, how to read and write English. She did this by using the Sears and Roebuck catalog pictures. She was also the past President of the Lake Shore Teachers Association. Upon her retirement from teaching, she worked at the Frank Lloyd Wright's Graycliff in Derby, NY, the Chautauqua Bookstore at Chautauqua Institution and Barnes & Noble in Hamburg. Cheryl was the Town of Evans Historian for 14 years, during which time she was commissioned by the town and ultimately authored the "Images of America. Evans and Angola" a fantastic book that chronicles the growth of the town from 1821 through the present. She was the secretary for the Evans Historical Society for 10 Years, attending every open house and event they ever had. She was responsible for the "Scenes of the Past" articles which ran weekly in the Angola Penny saver, of which her late mother, Virginia Tanner was co-owner. She was the past treasurer of the South towns Rural Preservation Company and belonged to many book clubs in the area. She traveled extensively to many book signings and author events, where she met and became a close friend of the well known mystery thrill writer, Barry Eisler. Cheryl was a great fan of Syracuse university basketball, attending many games throughout her life. She enjoyed watching football with her father, grandfather, uncle and son; she also was a major participant in Fantasy Football leagues.
