Salvatore L. Mogavero "Sam", died unexpectingly, Saturday December 19, 2009 in his Angola home, he was 91. Beloved husband of the late Claudia (Iannello) Mogavero; loving father of Donald (Diane) Mogavero Sr. Grandfather of Donald(Kathy)Mogavero Jr., Jeanne(Scott)Dillon and Sal(Dawn) Mogavero; Great Grandfather "Pappa" of Scott, Mackenzie, Megan Dillon, Katelyn, Donald, Jessica and Justin Mogavero. Brother of Frances (Joe) Calabretta and the late Joseph, Anthony, Peter, Carmen,Catherine, Sara and Philip. Brother-in-law of Mary(Ed)Forster, John Iannnello and Ev(late Carmen) Mogavero. Son of the late Domenic(Daniella) Mogavero. Friends may call Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9PM at the Addison Funeral Home, Inc. where prayers will be held Wednesday at 9:15AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in Most Precious Blood Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Angola Volunteer Fire Dept or Most Precious Blood Church.
Sam was born in North Collins, NY on August 25, 1918. He married Claudia M. Iannello, in 1940, and 2 years later had their only son, Donald Mogavero, of Angola, NY. Sam served in the US Army during WWII, serving in Italy. He worked for Chevrolet, a division of General motors back in the 1940's. He eventualy went to work for the Lake Shore Central School District, were he retired as head of the Maintenence Dept. He was very active in the CSEA Local 903, serving as former 1st. Vice President, Past president of Unit 4, and Chairsperson of the Constitutuion and By-Laws Committee. In 2007 he was awarded the Donald Webster Memorial Mission Achievement Award. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society and an Usher at Most Precious Blood Church.
At the age of 91, Sam is also known to be the 3rd Oldest ACTIVE Firemen, in Erie County. He has served Angola Volunteer Fire Department with over 57 Years of continuing service. Currently serving as a trustee. He also served as President in 1987, and held a commissioner position from 1977-1991.He was a charter member of the Benevolent Association, where he was President for over 13 years as well as serving as Vice president, Treasurer as well as a trustee. He was a Captain for the Fire Police, for more than 8 years. A Life member of the Erie County Fire Police Assoc. and head of Angola's Ladder Truck Committee. In 2006 He was recoginized as One of The Bravest of Western New York, for his Hero's extraordinary commitment to the Citizens of WNY. The Erie County Volunteer Firemen's Assoc. awarded him a Lifetime Achievement award in 2007, and in 2000, the Erie County Volunteer Fire police Assoc. awarded him their Fire Service Award. For years Sam was seen driving Angola's Antique Fire Truck at the fair and various other events.
Sam was also a Charter member of Evans Township, VFW Post 5798, where he was a member for over 60 years. He was also a member of American Legion Newcomb Long Post 928 of Derby, NY.
